Petrochemical Industry – Overview

Petrochemicals are derived from crude oil or natural gas. Ethylene, Propylene, Butadiene (Olefins) or Benzene, Toluene & Xylene (Aromatics) are building block of petrochemicals. In the first stage, naphtha is produced from crude oil or natural gas feedstock and is cracked to produce petrochemicals. India has large scale players like Reliance Industries, Indian Oil Corp who enjoy economies of scale.

The industry derives demand from growth in GDP, urbanization etc., India has achieved self sufficiency in a capital intensive industry. The industry is exposed to cyclical fluctuations once every 6-8 years. Further, the industry faces challenges in securing feedstock and import duties in differences between feedstock and end-products
